Arts & Crafts Productions
There is a lot of talent in Canada and Arts & Crafts is recognizing that talent through providing a music-focused media and artist services as an independent record label, management firm, merchandiser, and publisher worldwide. Well distinguished amongst the Canadian artist community, Arts & Crafts has earned 20 JUNO awards and has been called one of Canada’s most important record labels.
Arts & Crafts was launched as a music company in 2003 by friends Jeffrey Remedios, a former Virgin Records executive and Kevin Drew, who co-founded the Canadian Indie band Broken Social Scene (BSS) with Brendan Canning. The partnership was originally intended as a source for self-release and artist management of Broken Social Scene’s breakthrough album ‘You Forgot it in the People.’ However, with the popularity and growth of the music scene came the opportunity to work with artists who were involved and not involved with BSS. The labels first releases were by Stars, Jason Collete, Feist, Apostle of Hustle and Valley of the Giants. In 2005, the band The Most Serene Republic was the first band to sign with A&C that was not related to BSS. Ever since then many artists have been apart of the A&C family producing JUNO award winning music.
A&C began to expand into the digital music business launching Gallery AC.com in 2005. Gallery AC.com is a boutique web store that offered digital downloads and Arts & Crafts related merchandise. They were one of the first labels to launch a digital download store and are in control or administer the publishing rights to much of the music that is released off of their label.
Some of my favourite artists are or have been apart of the Arts & Crafts label. Some artist you may find on my iPod that are involved (or were involved) with Arts & Crafts would be: Stars, Broken Social Scene, The Dears, The Stills, Metric, Feist, Constantines, Amy Millan (singer from Stars), Jason Collet, Timber Timbre, the list could go on and on! I am a huge fan of all that A&C has done and if you’re into the Indie music scene, I strongly recommend you take a listen to any of the bands that are or have been on their record label! Pure bliss for your ears! You can find out more at http://arts-crafts.ca/index-ie.php with the mention of new record releases, tour dates, artist info, and much more!
